More about probiotics

ASTARTE Probiotics comfort for women

Probiotic market for Women´s health is massively growing. According to the latest Lumina Intelligence Report “Probiotics & Women’s Health” in July 2019, this category has a potential target audience of more than 1.4 billion women in the 20 countries they surveyed, which includes the biggest probiotic markets like US, China, Italy and so on.

Being one of the most innovative products in this area, Astarte is the unique probiotic for women, which is ideally formulated with selected strains representing the predominant vaginal Lactobacillus species found in healthy women. Astarte patented strains were demonstrated in many clinical studies to be effective to restore and maintain protective vaginal lactobacilli levels and lower vaginal pH in support of vaginal microbial ecosystem balance with oral supplementation. In addition, this exclusive formulation is also available as a yoghurt drink.

GOOD BACTERIA PROMOTES
WOMEN’S HEALTH

Lactobacilli are essential for keeping the vaginal flora healthy and for the prevention of vaginal infections. Under certain circumstances, lactobacilli may be lost and vaginal infection may occur with accompanying symptoms such as vaginal discharge, itching, and burning pain. We know today that the intestinal tract functions as a reservoir for vaginal lactobacilli, and that oral supplementation of lactobacilli helps to keep the vaginal flora normal and to prevent vaginal infection. It is further known that the vaginal flora is kept healthy with a physiologic composition of lactobacilli. Therefore, a composition of the physiological vaginal lactobacilli has been developed to support the vaginal flora with lactobacilli using oral supplementation. This oral supplementation with lactobacilli results in a physiologic maintenance of the vaginal flora and in vaginal health.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

Bacterial vaginosis is a mismatch of the vaginal flora. Normally in healthy women the vaginal flora is dominated by lactobacillus. There are many different lactobacilli species responsible for mantaining a healthy environment in the vagina. If lactobacilli disappear there is an overgrowth of mostly anaerobic bacteria like Gardnerella, Prevotella, Mobiluncus which cause a vaginal discharge and bad odor or sometimes also vaginal and/or lower abdominal pain.
Bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted disease. It is caused though a complete loss of lactobacilli, which are responsible for a normal, healthy vaginal environment.
Due to new data of scientific research we know today, that the intestinal tract is a reservoir for lactobacilli. From studies we know that lactobacilli colonize the intestinal tract. Especially the rectum and anus are colonized by lactobacilli as well as the vagina. If there is a lactobacillus loss in the intestinal tract then there is a high risk for bacterial vaginosis. Loss of lactobacilli in the rectum are associated with frequently recurrent bacterial vaginosis.
There is the possibility to support the vagina with lactobacilli either locally or orally. New scientific data shows that the vaginal lactobacillus flora vagina can be enriched with lactobacilli.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ASTARTE STRAINS

No. L. crispatus LbV 88, L. jensenii LbV 116, L. gasseri LbV 150N, and L. rhamnosus LbV 96 were isolated from healthy pregnant women and selected from multiple strains of these predominant vaginal Lactobacillus species for probiotic attributes to support vaginal and urinary tract health.

Yes. The vaginal microbiota is dynamic and its composition can change rapidly in response to various common biological, environmental, and behavioral factors. Furthermore, many otherwise healthy women may still have low vaginal Lactobacilli abundance. Reduced protective vaginal Lactobacilli can increase risk of various adverse gynecological and obstetric outcomes. Use of probiotic strains clinically validated to support vaginal microbial ecosystem balance promotes health maintenance.

Clinical research has shown increased vaginal Lactobacilli in as little as one week of oral supplementation with L. crispatus LbV 88, L. jensenii LbV 116, L. gasseri LbV 150N, and L. rhamnosus LbV 96. However, individual responsiveness may vary.

Increased incidence of side effects relative to placebo have not been observed in clinical studies nor has there been any reports of side effects with use of these probiotic strains. However, a woman should consult with her doctor if being cared for due to preexisting illness.

Astarte – an award winning product

This year Astarte has already obtained the prize “Probiotic Product of the Year” of NIA Awards in Geneva in May and of the NIA USA Awards in New Orleans in June and is one of the finalists in Asia as well. The winner of the NIA Awards Asia in the category “Probiotic Product of the Year” will be announced on September 24th in Singapore.
